From birth young Michael was immersed in the spiritual sounds of gospel music and the velvet tones of Nat King Cole. Growing up in Jamaica, he was surrounded by the seductive wail of reggae. A natural musician, he mastered the drums and congas at age 9. By age 13 he was the star of his church choir.
But everything changed when Michael heard Luther Vandross sing “Never Too Much” for the first time. From that moment on Michael Mendez was inspired to become an entertainer and a singing sensation.
As a teenager he became a dynamic lead singer for stalwart bands such as Solid State and the Clancy Ecceles Junior Soul Band, thrilling audiences throughout Jamaica with his heartfelt delivery and soaring vocal talent.

At age 19 he landed his first professional gig as a cabaret singer, working at two of Kingston’s premier entertainment venues, The Wyndham and Jamaica Pegasus hotels. From there Mendez honed his stage craft and then extended his horizons to the north coast areas of Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril and soon after become one of the most sought after cabaret singers on the North Coast at the tender age of 21. Audiences were captivated with his vibrant performances, masterful stage presence and his warm rapport with the crowd.
Soon thereafter, he hooked up with musical prodigy Dean Fraser who Mendez describes as his musical godfather. This led to him adding background vocals for musical royalty such as Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Gregory Isaacs, Mikey Spice, Luciano as well as worldwide tours and also opened for international acts such as Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Gregory Isaacs, Mikey Spice, Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack and Jeffery Osborne. Michael soon became a recording artist and during this time, he recorded tracks for and worked with the world famous super group Third World.
